Suzy Papnikolas
POI PADDLERS, OUR KAULANA NAPUA
June 8th through August 4th, 2004

POI
Hula Hands Saying Aloha
Acrylic on Canvas
30" x 30"
$3000

Suzy Papanikolas’ imagery is characterized by bold, naturalistic portrayals of local people going about their daily lives. Her portraits often zoom in on a portion of the figure; the torso, feet or face- no matter how she focuses, you can’t be shy in front of one of these canvases! She makes the figures monumental in her compositions and so evokes a sense of reverence for the routine moments in which they are frozen.

Sisters

Acrylic and Resen on Canvas
37" x 49"
$4000

The new work in this show demonstrates Papanikolas’ clear affection for her subjects - hula dancers from the Merrie Monarch Festival, Hawaiians performing sacred ceremonies and competitive swimmers at the Hilo pool. Papanikolas uses colored resin in some of these works, a new technique to evoke water in this new group of paintings. "I am trying something different to get the wetness of the water in this show. I am using colored resin as a background for the figures. It is very experimental and exciting for me."
