All of the pieces are made of porcelain clay. I first throw the
forms on a wheel
at which point they may be altered. I burnish (rub) each piece with
a small smooth stone.
This is done over and over again as the clay dries until it's smooth
and shiny.
This is usually over a period of 5 days. Then they are initially
fired to
about 1900 degrees. They are fired a second time with sawdust, seaweed,
anything that will burn and fume to give the pattern and color of the
piece.
The pattern is dependent on the temperature of the clay, smoke, fumes
and
how the air flows. Because these are somewhat random, uncontrollable
factors, there are no two pieces which are exactly alike.
Unfortunately,
the colors are burned off at higher temperatures so the porcelain is not
totally vitrified or fired enough to become hard and durable. The
pieces
are fragile and should be viewed as nonfunctional.
I love making these. I like its color and feel.
Everytime I open the kiln it's like christmas over again. |
