The Rites of Spring, the title of the upcoming exhibition by Margaret Bedell and Joseph Fletcher, speaks to the delights we encounter when nature takes reign of the season and reveals its primordial tale of color, life, light, birth and rebirth. With utmost respect and reverence, both of these artists have captured the nuances and beauty of this special time of year in oil and watercolor resulting in a comprehensive collection on display at Viewpoints Gallery in Makawao, beginning with an Opening Reception on February 18th at 6:00.

Margaret Bedell and Joseph Fletcher are primarily plein air artists who seek inspiration in the scenes that unfold before them. They are never disappointed as the world opens up and reveals itself right in front of their easels, only to be enhanced by trained eyes and skilled hands, reborn on canvas and paper.

Margaret, who works in oils and watercolor, is also an accomplished print maker, adding dimension and intrigue into her artwork through a variety of mediums and techniques. One never knows how she will approach a subject, as the tools she has at her disposal are influenced by her whim, wit, and wisdom. We revel in her vision and interpretation of the wonders and splendors that surround us, giving us a new insight into the season.

Joseph Fletcher is the quintessential plein air artist who endures the changing nature of weather, terrain and obstacles to bring us exceptional oil paintings of life on Maui. Springtime provides Joe with increased appeal, as he embraces the season with revived fervor and aplomb, giving us cause to enjoy the season with renewed spirit and attention. Within a small space of oil and canvas, he transports us to the inner beauty and distinctive qualities inherent to this time of year. He makes us see what is right in front of us.
