Once a year, Maui’s heritage is honored as Viewpoints Gallery hosts one of the most anticipated events of the year: A Celebration of Hawai'i – featuring inspired artwork from the island’s premier artists.  Over fifty artists explore the essence, power, and allure of their island home through art: The results are extraordinary, culminating in an exhibition of historical significance.

This exhibit offers a rare opportunity to become immersed in the culture, the people, and the heart of the island, as they are immortalized through hand, spirit and talent.  The entire gallery is dedicated to this event and is transformed into one of the most comprehensive displays of contemporary Hawaiian art in mediums as diverse as the culture.  Oils, acrylic, watercolor, encaustic, ceramics, glass, photography, sculptures, stone carving, wood work, jewelry, bead work, fibers, feathers, baskets, hats, kapa, etc, are shaped, formed, fashioned, and finished into museum-quality artwork.  Clients and collectors from around the state and the world await this exhibit, which has become an annual pilgrimage for many.

The exhibit opens on February 5th, with an Opening Reception on the 8th,  highlighted by Hawaiian chants, instruments, and dance performed by Kamehameha Schools’ Maui Hawaiian Ensemble under the guidance of Kumu Kalei Lorenzo-Aarona.  The show will continue to transform throughout the length of the exhibition as new work is rotated and displayed, concluding on April 7th.   Throughout the exhibition, workshops related to Hawaiian culture such as quilt making, lei making, medicinal plants growing on the island, and more will be offered.

Ho'okipa, Maui
by Betty Hay Freeland

oil on linen

24 x 32 $2850 liner/gold frame

A beautiful moderate windy day at Ho'okipa allowed me to find a sheltered spot and paint. The colors of the water and reefs really get my attention. The sugar cane fields in the mid-ground are part of the only plantation left on Maui. I always enjoy the cloud patterns across the West Maui Mountains, and Molokai in the distance.

A beautiful scene at any time of the day. This was a summer sunset, which highlights Molokai in the distance and the Kahakaloa headland.

This piece is part of a new series of architectural and industrial abstracts shot on location with chrome slide film. To me, the industrial aspect of Hawai'i, the pineapple industry, the sugar cane industry, the harbors and sailing, shipping and nautical history are all a big part of the wonderful cultural diversity that make Life here in the islands so special.

The theme of this piece comes from a children's song by Nona Beamer It is a poem that ends with "It truly is a beautiful world." It describes the hawaiian landscape. I used a native plant at the bottom & a native bird at the top, things to cherish & protect, just as all the hawaiian world should be as it is all truly beautiful.

After I had painted this en plein air, I had a number of people comment on enjoying views like this as they ride their bikes down the slopes of Haleakala. Kaaholawe and Molokini are the islands offshore. The view covers the pastures down to the Wailea coastline.
