Art from a $15 camera? "Why not," Gwen Arkin says, "I’ve been exploring the parameters of photography for more than 20 years, and love the spontaneous and experimental nature of the medium. Lately I’ve been having a lot of fun with the Holga, a plastic, Chinese camera; most of the work you see in this show was done with a Holga. I’m attracted to its accidental nature; the unexpected ways it catches the light, the role serendipity plays in the process, the results that are always a surprise. Since I’m not completely in control, that little plastic camera encourages me to work viscerally." |

Gwen continues, "I never plan when I go out to photograph, but I know what I like: texture, patterns, the quality of afternoon light. Clouds and trees—especially the skeletons of trees—are favorite subjects, the texture of bark, the patterns in branches, the way light comes through clouds, the way it casts shadows. I like finding the beauty in the mundane, and in objects that other people don’t find beautiful. Memory, too—which is one reason I prefer to work in black-and-white, and do hand-coloring. I’m in love with process. My hope is that the work will speak to you the way it speaks to me." |
