Viewpoints is pleased to host the East Maui Watershed Partnership
as they sponsor Malama Wao Akua, a juried art exhibit. On Tuesday, August
31, jurors George Allan and Phil Sabado chose from among dozens of entries
in all types of media. The main subject of the artwork must emphasize the
native flora, fauna or landscape of East Maui. Before jurying, artwork was
reviewed by expert biologists from the East Maui Watershed Partnership.
Over the last 3 months, nearly 60 people have participated in hikes with the Partnership geared specifically to making artwork for this exhibit. “We want to use art as a way to teach the community about the importance of our watersheds and the jewels of our native Hawaiian forest,” says Kat Lui, public relations associate for the EMWP. “Many people who come to the exhibit will be surprised to see depictions of ‘new’ species they never knew existed.” The public is invited to view the Malama Wao Akua ‘o Maui Hikina exhibit at two other locations this fall: September 30- October 28 at Haleakala National Park Visitor Center, and October 30-November 29 at the Hana Public Library.
