Judy Bisgard - Juror's Statement:
"Have fun with the Makawao Paint Out! This area has so much interesting subject matter. As a juror, I would be looking for a certain "vitality" in the artist's work... perhaps coming from "putting one spot of color next to another -- the fundamental thing" (a quote from Charles Webster Hawthorne 1872-1930)."
Judy Bisgard has been active in the art community in Hawai'i for over 30 years, serving on the Board of the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts for 8 years, and on the Boards of the Maui Arts & Cultural Center and Hui No'eau Visual Arts Center. Judy has a fiber piece in the State Collection and is a painter and printmaker. Academically, she earned a BA in History, with a minor in Fine Art from Mills College in Oakland, California.
Joseph Fletcher - Juror's Statement
"I am delighted to serve as juror for the Great Makawao Paint-Out, the premier, annual en plein air art event for Upcountry Maui. I have been a plein air artist for many years and I have been honored to have my work exhibited in this event in past years. What better place to express one's artistic talent than in Upcountry Maui with its glorious coastal and mountain views, topped by majestic Haleakala.
I approach my task with great interest and enthusiasm, to view my home through your eyes. To see what you saw, right there, right then, and how you stated it in paint will be exciting. Choosing from the many will be a daunting task. Be assured, however, that each work will receive careful consideration from an artist's point of view."
The gift of a paint set and lessons, from Joe's grandfather, began the artist's lifelong love of painting. Since then, Joseph Fletcher's art education at Woodbury College, Los Angeles, has been enhanced by his subsequent studies with premier artists such as George Allan, Kevin MacPherson and Randall Sexton.
Living on Maui since 1995, Joe trudges through cow pastures, old sugar mills, under waterfalls and onto volcanoes, painting all the while.
Joe's paintings have been selected for Art Maui, the Hui No'eau Visual Arts Center, and the annual exhibitions of the Hawai'i Watercolor Society, as well as purchases by the Foundation on Culture & the Arts for the State Collection. |
