ARTIST'S STATEMENT
I like to feel saturated in color. Looking at the sea, the sky, a painting. I'm drawn to big fields of color and simple compositions. A reminder of the power and beauty of the world around us, a voice for simplicity and conservation.
A career in science brought me to the islands, and art is how I have chosen to respond. I began teaching about the ocean in a classroom and my paintings are a continuation of that path. Science groups things together and art allows them to stand alone. Intuitive,
involving, affecting statements are the ones I have chosen to make.
BIOGRAPHY
After graduating from Connecticut College in 1998, Sharon McGauley moved to the Florida Keys to teach marine biology at an outdoor education facility. Eventually the cramped living quarters (living on a boat with a studio on another) dictated a move to Key West where she started working on a local dive boat.
Eventually she and a friend opened an art gallery there, the Lemonade Stand Art Studio, where they worked at their easels in the large front room and displayed their finished work in a white walled gallery in the back.
McGauley lived and worked in Key West for 5 years, creating a large number of oil paintings that can be found in collections all over the country and abroad. She is currently residing in Maui, where she continues to work on the water.
