To agree to work with another artist on a singular work, as opposed to a body of combined works, is somewhat intimidating. We have one chance to get it right. What will we do? How will we do it? What made it seamless for us was the trust we had in each others visions and the openness to adapt and change in mid project as we bounced ideas and concepts off of each other during the journey. In the end our piece was quite different than when we first talked about what to do and we created something born from two minds that neither of us had ever done before.
Both Jim and I have had very intense life shifts in the past few months - family death, life, work, art. During this time we agreed to participate in this very exciting endeavor called Collaborations. My working to mill and save local wood combined with Jim’s metal copper plates used to make his prints seemed like a natural. The wonderful grain-like texture of Jim’s copper plates complimented the grain of the Norfolk pine so beautifully we decided to make a symbol: a wheel of copper inside the heart of an old growth pine tree from Polipoli. We’ve made a wish, a wheel, a prayer that we all can do more to protect our forests, our trees our Aina.
Our hope is that you stop, take a moment to spin the glorious wheel Jim has made, say a prayer, make a wish that we keep moving forward to grow our forests and take care of this Big Blue Marble we call earth! |

Besides being dedicated to their various art projects, both Ray and Bella are professional coaches in the field of personal development. “Living beyond Boundaries” provides the opportunity to let go of attachments and identifications relating to what limits us and holds us back.
Each unbounded Self-Help Book is the reminiscence of bygone days, when collecting intellectual data and certifications overshadowed the ability to be present. By gratefully releasing superseded structures and repurposing their most treasured influences, Ray and Bella allowed their own inner wisdom to flow freely in the present moment. The re-emerged array of sculptured knowledge now radiates in a rediscovered frequency of freedom and possibility.
“Message from Within” displays the influences of belief systems that have been imprinted on us throughout our informative years. The scale-like arrangement of repurposed book pages corresponds to the layers of patterns that shape our life’s decisions.
The pure unembellished middle section shows who we truly are, prior to the time when these beliefs were adopted. The white on white texture from the left bottom area imperceptibly advances, superimposing feelings of ‘not being good enough’ and displaying our endless attempts to morph into what we belief others may accept, like, or love.
Only in bypassing the distractions and expectations of the outside world are we able to turn to that quite place deep inside of us, the crack filled with our unique essence. By doing so, we tap into our inner guidance to find the profound wisdom that resides in each of us. |

Shining Essence

“Shining Essence” is the visualization of the process of freeing one’s Essence from the illusions of conditioning: The metal on the left part of the work represents the ‘amour of protections’, which safeguards our fears and insecurities.
The white/gray impermeable texture on the right symbolizes the conditioned patterns and responses that have been imprinted onto us by our social environment. Both are inauthentic expressions and influence the way we interact in our relationships. Not only do they skew our own self image, but how we are perceived by others as well.
The deep crack of gold leaf embodies the true Essence of a person, which only becomes visible if we allow ourselves to dig deeper, looking beyond the first impression of a person. When freed of any judgment, our Essence begins to shine, and radiates as a congruent reflection of our uniqueness. |

The process of collaborating has been a wonderful journey for both of us. Our primary hope as we started was to explore the process of developing and deepening our own relationship. We thought we'd do this by going on a series of "dates". Each of us would then work independently to create works inspired by these shared experiences. While this journey has certainly deepened our connection, the original structure for how we would work gave way to new structures that arouse organically out of our deepening relationship.
The progression of how we structured our work is as follows:
We began by reflecting on our dates and working separately, without seeing one another's work. We then moved to allowing our work to be in dialogue, i.e. showing each other our work, as the source of inspiration for the following pieces. From here we decided to exchange work and allow the other person to work into something we'd created. Next we worked on two pieces simultaneously, in the same space, in true collaboration: moving back and forth numerous times between the two pieces, sometimes discussing what we were doing and sometimes not. Finally, we returned to once again working independently, but still side-by-side, sharing critique and giving input along the way. The two large, final pieces that emerged are reflective of our individual experiences of our relationship through this collaborative process.
As can be seen in the work itself, this journey has brought our mediums, technique, ideas, and creative processes into dialogue. It has pushed, challenged and inspired each of us in healthy ways, and it is likely that we will carry these influences on into the future. |
