Maui plein air painters (professional and Sunday alike), were invited to
get out on the town streets for the Second Annual Great Makawao Paint
Out, which started Wednesday, May 15th and continued through Tuesday,
May 28th. Sponsored by Viewpoints Gallery and the Makawao Merchants
Association, the Paint Out is also a benefit for the Maui Paniolo
This year, forty plein aire artists participated in the event which culminated
in a grand opening at Viewpoints Gallery on Saturday, June 1st. Most of
the artists who submitted the over 60 paintings attended the awards ceremony
along with family and friends. Their works will hang in Viewpoints Gallery
through June 12th; most are available for purchase.
Darrell Orwig, this year's juror, had a difficult time deciding
on the Winning Poster but presented the award to Ronaldo Macedo
for his oil painting entitled Down the Street.
Orwig next presented Brent Cotton with the Best In Show Award for
his oil painting Window Shopping. The
People's Choice Award was won by Ronaldo Macedo for his
second entry, an oil, titled Welcome to Makawao.
Dozens of honorable mentions, prizes, certificates and gifts were awarded
to 30 artists in all.. from Gerard Liuaudais, who, at the age of
40 submitted his fourth painting (an oil Natural
Ambience) to Miles Hecker, who submitted a simple, fresh
pencil and watercolor he calls Kitada's.
Miles came in 5th in the competition. He is 10 years old.
