A VISIT WITH MARTHA WOODBURY

Winding up a country wood, I am surrounded by the intense colors of a Maui Spring - lavender to purple, gold, bright red amongst the green of new foliage. Once inside Martha Woodbury's studio, I witness the same colors on paintings that hang, lean and sit in groups.

Coalesce
Acrylic on Canvas
20" x 24"
$1795

The geometric imagery softens into abstract organic shapes. Interestingly, the sphere appears in every work.

The artist explains, “The show is about layers of reality. When
looking deep into the matrix of life and mind… the slightest shift in
perspective, and a whole new view comes into play". She is still working with: “the concept of how the linear and the circular play off… and on… each other, keeping in mind that the linear represents the masculine and the circular, the feminine".

There are about 18 paintings for this show, varying in size and shape, mostly on canvas stretched by the artist, all with deep stretcher bars and canvas wrapped around . The sides are also part of the painting. Thus each painting will stand as a finished work of art: no frame will distract from the flow of pure color.

Slipping Through Time
Acrylic on Wood
46" Diameter
$3300
In this body of work, besides her acrylic paints, the artist is playing with mixed media, using found objects, stencils of various grids, squares, some hexagonal honeycomb shapes. She often works outside, in the rarified atmosphere of her studio in Kula, far above the isthmus below. There, leaning or hanging on an outer wall, are some works in progress. One is vertical, 79" X 15". It is a subtle layered work, in which the viewer can see another layer behind the top imagery, another depth of field.

Shimmer
Acrylic on Canvas
48" x 54"
$3980
To the artist, each show is a separate creation, growing as a unit, a body of work, building to intensity as it reaches maturity. At the same time, each new body of work grows from all the previous works. Martha states that "Each show is a journey, an exploration, a treasure hunt for the artist."
