Traditions: Allan, Rabold & Rea
George Allan, Al Rabold, and J.B. Rea

show dates
December 10 – January 12

opening reception
5:00pm on Saturday, December 12th

Traditions: Allan, Rabold & Rea, the title of the upcoming exhibit by artists George Allan, Al Rabold, and J.B. Rea at Viewpoints Gallery in Makawao, identifies what inspired all of them to create their artwork. A painter, a woodturner, and a jeweler, have combined forces to stage a very impressive show based on traditions, that runs from December 10 – January 12, with an Opening Reception at 5:00, on Saturday, December 12th.

George Allan, one of the premier palette-knife artists in the Islands who also is permanently on display at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center, sought subject matter that spoke of passing traditions: His painting of pineapple workers was finished just weeks prior to the announcement of the closing of this island institution. Al Rabold, a woodturner recently lauded in the just-released book, Contemporary Hawaiian Woodworkers, used traditional techniques in untraditional approaches, redefining classic applications in contemporary ways. J.B. Rea, a master jeweler and instructor at the Hui No’eau Visual Arts Center, used silversmithing tools invented in the 1400’s to produce artwork that goes back to his traditions, when he produced his first pieces of jewelry.

The combined talent of these three artists has coalesced into an impressive collection that speaks to the intrinsic value and appeal of the concept, Tradition. Through a wide variety of mediums, approaches, and identifying visions, this significant element of our past, present, and future, is beautifully honored and revered.

Tropical Impressions

Most people admire the beautiful petals of a tropical flower, but seldom see more. Many of Hawai’i’s best, like the naupaka or pua kinikini, have deep bells of sensuous, elegant curves that inspired this two-axis turning. Though noted for the realism of his floral designs “Tropical Impressions” hopefully yields a more impressionistic way of seeing a petals, bell and stamen.

Inside-Out

Inside-out turning is a highly technical, barrel stave construction technique pioneered by the artist about 3 years ago. The designs must be developed wholly within Autocad, a 3D engineering computer-aided software package, to assure necessary accuracy of the staves. The final configuration of the piece is created then projected to create the turning that is “inside out” following the concave radius of the finished piece. The staves are then cut for the end item and the turning on a table saw with digital devices allowing 5 thousandths inch linear and 1/10 of a degree angular accuracy and glued together to form the turning blank. The turning is completed then broken apart and re-glued into its final form.
