Melia (plumeria) are one of the artist’s favorite flowers and have been used by him in a number of pieces including a wearable lei. The variety of colors and their sweet aroma have inspired artists forever and a melia lei is a Hawi’ian classic. This sculptured and pierced piece, long planned and attempted once without success, is a labor of love. It features 20 hand carved flowers and associated leaves in camphor, a favored carving wood.

A beautiful milo tree grows for decades, forever reaching for the sun. In its second reincarnation, its inner beauty is revealed in a simple form again reaching and waiting to re-open. Sometimes an wood artist must suppress his creative urges and let the material speak for itself. |
Parfait
by Al Rabold
spanish cedar
6.5 x 17 dia $2250 +$120 ship
Sometimes a grungy ugly duckling reveals itself to be a beautiful swan. As in this piece, the best an artist can hope to do is to give it a form that best displays its beauty unadorned. The reds, oranges and custard yellows so dramatically intertwined reminded the artist of a strawberry parfait, hence its name. |
Aloalo
by Al Rabold
opiuma
3 x 16.5 dia $1650 +$90 ship
Aloalo (hibiscus) is a beautiful, delicate and exceptionally detailed blossom. When originally conceived the artist was planning a lifelike bas relief in his usual style for the bottom of the turning. While discussing it with his wife, Jeanne, she suggested something simpler and more stylized for a change. It was challenging and exciting to free his mind from the realism of his usual floral pieces and work free of all but minimal restraints. “Aloalo” is dedicated to my Jeanne. |
