The Tsar’s Church of Alexander Nevsky, Yalta
by Kathleen MacDonald
acrylic on board
30" x 24"
34" x 28" $1,500 framed
One quiet damp spring Monday, we left Chekhov’s house and museum (it
being Monday, most all of the museums were closed all over the world)
and looked for this incredibly ornate cathedral built near the Tsar’s
last palace, Livadia, Yalta on the Crimean Peninsula. Its pristine
grandeur on such a dreary day overwhelmed us. This was probably the
last cathedral the Russian Monarchs visited before their arrest and
murder by the bolsheviks nearly 90 years ago. It has that sense of
the old imperial glory of tsarist Russia. It has recently been
renovated and probably looked then as it does now.
I loved the challenge of imparting an impression of all the golden
domes, corners and crevices. Painting such architecture gives one a
sense of the great abilities of the designer. Even the empty spaces
between the towers were beautifully emphasized. |
The Swallow’s Nest, Yalta
by Kathleen MacDonald
acrylic
20" x 16"
24" x 20" $950 framed
We took a boat excursion from Yalta to dock at the "Swallow’s Nest",
a dramatic castle built on a high cliff above the Black Sea. The
building, as local legend has it, was constructed by a German
Industrialist, Baron von Steinheil in 1911-1912 for his mistress. He
sold it to return to Germany at the outbreak of WWI. He never
returned. Despite the fact that it is now a pricey Italian restaurant
busy with lots of tourists, it still gave me a sense of foreboding
and desolation. I tried to instill into the painting the romantic
feeling I felt when I first saw it. |

Visit to Chinatown, Honolulu
by Kathleen MacDonald
acrylic
12" x 12"
18" x 18" $850 framed
Painting by the seat of our pants, (and sometimes on them!), we
painted this scene in downtown Oahu early in the morning on the way
to the Honolulu airport to catch a flight back to Maui. It took an
amazingly short time for an empty shop to become a bustling hive of
color and activity. (I took the opportunity to buy some lychee.

A Visit to Iao
by Kathy MacDonald
acrylic
12" x 12"
15.5" x 15.5" $750 framed
"Along with the able talents of Margaret Leach, we were inspired to
paint this "Visit to Iao" . This is one of Margaret’s favorite places
to paint. The mountains were playing hide and go seek in the valley
as the fogs lifted and shifted. The tiny bridge caught the only ray
of sunlight..."

Narita Rice Paddy
by Kathleen MacDonald
acrylic
16" x 20"
18" x 22" $950 framed
Ambitiously I lugged all of my painting gear to my second trip to
Narita, but unfortunately the jet lag got to me before I could finish
this painting. I love to paint plein air! I started this painting in
1989 when United Airlines took over the Pan Am routes to Japan. I
finally finished it up in 2006. I still remember the moodiness of the
day as it couldn’t decide to be sunny or cloudy! The reflections were
amazing in the water. September/October 1989 |
A Long Hike in Geitau
by Kathleen MacDonald
acrylic
16" x 20"
21" x 25" $950 framed
This is a farm area in Germany. It is very bucolic and full of barns
with cows that are yearning to get out and gambol in the spring
grass. You can’t see them, but you can smell them.

Blue Mosque
by Kathleen MacDonald
acrylic
14" x 11"
18' x 15" $850 framed
Our trip to Istanbul took us to an exquisite night-time view of the "Blue Mosque" in Turkey. It was a lovely warm evening in early May,
2006 and a stunning beginning to our visit to Turkey. |
Sometimes Travel is Lonely
by Kathleen MacDonald
acrylic
36" x 24"
37" x 25" $2,000 framed
This is a brief, hopeful moment in the life of a traveler waiting for
a ride home? Maybe they forgot to pick me up? How long will it take?
Will I be welcomed? Will there be a pillow for my head? Anxious
thoughts, all... |

Aloha from the Heart
by Kathleen MacDonald
watercolor
15" x 22"
24" x 30" $1,700 framed
The Captain's last flight...One clear summer morning in Honolulu, we
were taxiing to the gate. All of a sudden we were caught in a rainbow
shower. The Captain was retiring. He was being showerd with a
dramatic water lei to honor this, his last working flight. |
Matt’s Palm
by Kathy MacDonald
acrylic
12" x 9"
17" x 14" $675 framed
This was painted on a visit to Matt and Sandie Daniel’s home in Kula.
Margaret Leach, a well respected watercolorist from Maui brought me
to her son’s home. The palm was a regal sentinel guarding their house. |
