Dogon Women With Child
by Beth Marcil

acrylic and graphite on canvas
20 x 20   $3500 gallery wrap +$140 ship

For years, I'd heard about the Dogon people of Mali, West Africa and was intrigued by everything I read. I knew that one day I would visit them in their remote location and finally did so in 2004. I was particularly fascinated by the importance they place on keeping harmony with their community and decided to highlight their wisdom by integrating the following passage into the piece.

"The Dogon people are strongly oriented toward harmony, which is reflected in many of their rituals. In one of their most important rituals, the women praise the men, the men thank the women, the young express appreciation for the old, and the old acknowledge the contributions of the young."

African Queen
by Beth Marcil

acrylic on canvas
12 x 12   $1400 +$85 ship

While traveling in West Africa, I was taken with how all the women carried themselves with a particular grace and dignity. They wore the most beautiful clothing and head wraps and had a regal quality that always turned my head. This Dogon woman captures the essence of that quality as she walks among her people, head held high, looking like royalty to me.
